About Kees
Lieutenant General (retired) Kees Matthijssen has had an impressive military career. He started as a conscript soldier and then became a professional officer. He held many command and staff positions, both nationally and internationally.
Most striking is that he fulfilled a commander's role in four missions, each at a different level. Kees was, among other things, commander of a Dutchbat III company during the fall of Srebrenica in 1995.
In his last position he was Force Commander of the UN mission MINUSMA in Mali, responsible for almost 14,000 blue helmets with 60 different nationalities.
A special position for him and for the Netherlands that brought him a wealth of experience at an international political and military strategic level.
